Helping new committals adapt to the new conditions of freedom deprivation means to find a link between the inmates’ two different life styles: one the one hand the background that they had before being arrested and, on the other hand, the prison environment, governed by well established rules and regulations.
There are two major aspects that have to be taken into consideration when approaching this subject. The first one is the adaptation stage when the new committal realizes that he/she has to adjust to a new environment while the other aspect concerns the legal framework and the actions of the personnel which are set in place to facilitate the inmate`s adjustment to the new environment.
The first step after being interned in a penitentiary is the quarantine and observation period. During this time, the inmates are assessed from the educational, psychological and social point of view by the specialists who will be involved in their rehabilitation process.
